Rolls of DetecTape™ H2 are typically 15ft (4.57m) in length. They are perforated at specific intervals to create strips for easier installation. The two perforation versions currently available are 4 inch (10cm) and 8 inch (20cm).

Before installation, be sure to clear the joint/connection of debris or oils for best results.

Use the instructions that come with each roll of DetecTape™ H2 to learn how to properly apply the wrap. Be sure to completely cover open areas such as the connection ends, joint gaps, and gasket areas that may be more prone to hydrogen leaks.

DetecTape™ H2 is gas permeable, allowing hydrogen gas to pass through the tape, which allows other hydrogen leak detection systems to sense through the tape.

The tape is expected to perform in temperatures below 300°F (149°C) for at least 365 days. It is recommended that the detector wraps be replaced every year for the best results.

DetecTape™ H2 is designed to be a permanent visual identifier once installed. It can be easily removed by a blade or scissor if a leak is detected, but cannot be reused. A new strip of DetecTape™ H2 should be installed after repairs have been made.

DetecTape™ H2 currently has a manufacturer warrantied shelf-life of 8 months from the manufacture date of the roll as long as the product is stored in a cool and dry environment. Please refer to the USE BY DATE on the outer shipping carton or the inside cardboard core of the roll.

What is the impact of temperature on the color change?2016-06-15T16:25:36+00:00

Generally, the lower the temperature in the environment, the slower the tape will react. Temperatures below 0°F (-17°C) result in an exponentially longer response time, possibly even months/years. In higher temperatures, the color changing process is accelerated. Temperatures above 350°F (176°C) are  known to break down the chemo-chromic pigments over time, deactivating the ability for the tape to change color. Further testing in developing a higher temperature ceiling is ongoing.

Is there a relationship between the concentration of hydrogen and the time it takes to change color?2020-02-18T21:55:12+00:00

Yes. The graph below visualizes the relationship between the hydrogen concentration and response time in a consistent environment. However, due to several field variables including temperature, pressure and leak rate,  this graph may not accurately represent your environment conditions.

DetecTape™ H2 can detect hydrogen, hydrogen-air mixtures, and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures.

What is the range of hydrogen concentration the tape can detect?2016-03-10T14:50:43+00:00

The tape has been tested and is optimally designed to react at 5.7% H2 in air. In the absence of oxygen, it will react stoichiometrically, therefore reacting at any concentration. Very small leaks take proportionately more time to completely darken.
